Go Green with Clover

Far from the nuisance once considered by gardeners, clover is a low-maintenance, drought-tolerant superstar of the new sustainable lawn. This little legume naturally enriches the soil by fixing nitrogen and thrives in our West Coast conditions.

In addition to its lush green appearance and soft feel underfoot, clover is a magnet for bees and other pollinators. It grows well in partial shade, doesn’t mind a little foot traffic, and never begs for synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Perfect for families, pets, and the planet.

Native Groundcovers for the Win

A variety of BC natives can anchor your garden design, gorgeously. Low-growing favourites like kinnikinnick, coastal strawberry, and woolly sunflower require minimal water and no fertilizer. Downsizing your lawn and weaving in native groundcovers adds texture and seasonal interest, all while retaining habitat for pollinators and other small creatures.

The Sustainable Lawn Checklist

Ready to rethink your turf? Here’s your starter kit:

  • ✅ Replace part (or all!) of your grass with clover or native groundcovers

  • ✅ Mow less and let flowering plants bloom

  • ✅ Ditch synthetic fertilizers—these plants don’t need them

  • ✅ Choose plants that feed local pollinators and birds

  • ✅ Use quiet, electric tools for any trimming or upkeep

Your lawn can be a living, thriving ecosystem, and no chemicals or weekend warriors needed.
